Golf course plan tees off village' opposition
PLANS to build an 18-hole golf course in Yatton Keynell have already received a number of objections.
The proposal to build the golf course on land adjacent to The Golf Academy on the B4039 has attracted 25 letters of objection from nearby residents.
Spokesman for the club Mike Bessell said: "This is something that the area desperately needs and something I hope people can get behind.
"This would be something for the local community and create a more vibrant village.
"We have conducted an ecological survey and will plant a huge number of trees to make the area as attractive as possible.
"We are also hoping that the golf course can be used by local school children.
"As with all planning applications, you expect to receive a few objections, but the feedback we have had has been largely good.
"This won't be a members only club like the courses in Castle Combe and Chippenham - it will be for the community.
"We have been here 16 years and this is just a step in the right direction."
The Golf Academy is currently just a golf range and associated shop.
The planning application is open for public consultation until March 27, but because it has already received more than five letters of objection it will be discussed by the Development Control Committee.
One objector, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "At the moment it is bearable, but with all these developments they start small and then keep growing and growing.
"We don't need another golf course - there are already two within reach of the village."
Anyone wishing to make a comment on the plans can do so by contacting Tracey Smith at North Wiltshire District Council on (01249) 706642.

I bet most traffic would not even go through Yatton Keynell so whats the problem. Bet most people who don't want it have not lived in the area long either.
Good luck Mike I hope you get permission for the course.

"This won't be a members only club like the courses in Castle Combe and Chippenham - it will be for the community."
Ummm? Obviously Mr Bessell you know little of your so called community. Chippenham golf club is not a members only club and actively welcomes visitors.
Also how anyone can think a new golf course in the area is a good business decision must need their head examined.

"We are also hoping that the golf course can be used by local school children." This says sod-all! "Hoping" is meaningless - I'm hoping to have an affair with Keira Knightley but its unlikely. How many schoolchildren? How often? At what charge?

You can play at most clubs for a fee (Normally huge)- if it were along the lines of Brinkworth I'd use it. Also once that large plot of land is turned over to golf, the likelihood of houses on it will be diminished, and housebuilding appears to be epidemic in YK at the moment.

Grumps - If I'm going to slice a ball out of bounds (again), I'd much prefer to have paid £15 for the round than £30..
